Salary Range: $22.63 – $28.53 per Hour

Job Summary

Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment at a skilled level such as: a backhoe, loader, dozer, track‑hoe, scraper, grader, knuckle boom tractor, etc. Assists in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Operates bulldozers, motor graders, and front‑end loaders to clear and level land for construction of roads, parking lots, building sites, compactor sites, and routine maintenance of county roads.
  • Operates flatbed or dump trucks to transport materials or haul brush/debris, gravel, and dirt.
  • Performs basic maintenance on backhoes, loaders, dozers, track‑hoes, scrapers, graders, knuckle boom tractor, and dump trucks, including washing, changing oil, greasing, checking all fluid levels and minor maintenance repairs.
  • Assists in performing unskilled or semi‑skilled labor such as pouring concrete, laying blocks, installing pipes, installing erosion controls and shoulder maintenance.
  • Operates a traffic control truck when following motor graders, moving equipment and working in inclement weather.
  • Assists in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Two years of Equipment Operator experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the minimum level of qualifications listed above.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Class A Driver’s License.
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Due to the safety‑sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County, including major roads and landmarks.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and safe operation of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of and skill in operating various types of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to take and follow directions from a supervisor.
  • Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Ability to lift objects of up to 100 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Physical ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting/standing), move across the worksite by walking, ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps, reach overhead, crouch or kneel, maintain equilibrium, push or pull items, repetitively use hands/arms/legs, grasp items, and move/transport items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Analytical thinking, stress handling, concentration on tasks, memory of names and details, observation of details, decision making, and adjustment to change.
  • Stamina to meet deadlines, operate equipment, and stay organized.
  • Ability to bend, twist, and move/transport items 26–75 lbs, including use of math/calculations.
  • Ability to crawl on hands and knees, transport 76–100 lbs, be on‑call, work irregular hours (nights/weekends), and attend meetings and training.
Sensory Ability
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use tools and equipment.
Environmental Factors
  • Exposure to risk of bodily injury from hazards including chemicals, sharp objects/tools, heavy machinery, and traffic; dirt/mud, fumes, gases, odors, dust, grease, oil; moving mechanical parts; extreme noise; vibration; and wet, slippery floors/surfaces.
  • Exposure to adverse environmental conditions: inclement weather, extreme hot or cold temperatures, biological hazards, high heights/places or constricted spaces, hot devices including burners and flame torches.
  • Exposure to electrical hazards occasionally.
  • Work with others, around equipment/machinery, drive county vehicles, walk on uneven ground.
