Motor Vehicle Operator II (OPS)

Safely operates large state vehicles in excess of 30,000 lbs to remove waste and recycling from UF campus. Drives front-load refuse truck and empties contents of dumpsters and carts into the collection truck. May drive to off-campus locations for collection and to disposal or processing sites operated by Alachua County and various private partners. Maintains collection information in electronic format via tablet noting the collection stops as they are completed.

A commercial driver s license (CDL) is required to operate a truck of this size and maintaining a valid CDL is a requirement of the position, including annual CDL physical and CDL-required random drug screenings as required by the Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Functions as part of the Recycling & Solid Waste Management team. Able to communicate effectively with the supervisor and fellow team members on a daily basis.

This is a flexible work environment in which team members fill in for different routes as needed.

Operates external equipment such as cart tippers to safely collect recyclable materials. Moves and relocates food compost carts, paper recycling carts, bottle & can recycling carts, and other collection containers to facilitate collection into the larger vehicle. May also operate a smaller carrier truck capable of moving front-load dumpsters and collecting baled cardboard, furniture, metals, and other large items. May work campus events to provide recycling collection assistance during normal business hours and non-business hours such as nights and weekends.

During daily route on campus, driver will record all collection stops completed and document any issues encountered. Driver will immediately phone or radio Supervisor to notify of any situations requiring immediate attention or action.

Performs daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and keeps trip logs as required. At the end of the shift, cleans cab and washes down collection vehicle. Notes any preventive maintenance or work that needs to be performed on the vehicle that might prevent its safe operation. Reports any concerns, issues, or defects to the Supervisor in a timely manner.

Attends departmental meetings and other university-related training sessions. Performs related work and general departmental duties as required.

This position requires a post-offer health assessment as required to hold a CDL.

Valid CDL Driver s License Required.

This position is covered by the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Test Act of 1991. Individuals applying for this position or incumbents are required to hold a valid Class “B” or higher Florida commercial drivers  license as a condition of employment. The Act requires that all such individuals be subject to pre-employment and continuing post-employment drug and alcohol testing. Failure to comply with such testing is grounds for immediate dismissal from employment with the University.

Work Schedule:

40 hours per week, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Adjustments to this schedule may be required by the Supervisor during heavy volumes (e.g., on-campus housing move-in/move-out periods). A monthly Saturday rotation is also a part of the normal schedule. During large events (e.g., football games), weekend work may be required. During periods of storm debris collection or other emergencies, this position will be classified as essential personnel and may be required to work to facilitate campus cleanup.

Some overtime may be required.

Expected Salary: $21.28 Hourly

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Completion of the ninth grade and one year of appropriate experience. Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred: At least one year of experience driving front-load recycling and solid waste trucks.
