Horticulture Education Coordinator

Description

At the intersection of plants, people, and purpose, the Horticulture Education Coordinator helps turn curiosity into connection and learning into action. This role delivers engaging, plant-focused educational experiences for learners of all ages and combines horticultural knowledge with teaching, mentorship, and community outreach. This position supports the Garden’s mission to inspire learning through plants while working closely with the Education Programs Manager to build partnerships with schools and community organizations.

• Coordinate student volunteers from university education department who will assist with weekend drop-in programming
• Coordinate volunteers from local high school service clubs who will assist with weekend programming and special events
• Coordinate work-based learning and volunteer high school students who are interested in horticulture
• Develop a horticulture intern program for college students with local technical schools
• Coordinate/organize special “pop-up” dinners and other educational opportunities tied to our edible garden
• Train both high school and college students on the maintenance of the containers at Renaissance (Downtown Gainesville)
• Assist with summer camp, after care, and other children's programming at the Gainesville Garden under the supervision of the Education Programs Manager
• Periodically instruct horticulture classes for adults
• Build relationships with local schools, universities, and other organizations that will help expand community engagement and guest visitation
• Attend community events, education fairs, scout events, and other outreach opportunities to market programs and expand engagement opportunities with the public

• Bachelor’s degree in science education, botany, biology, horticulture, or related field of study is preferred
• Knowledge of plant science, gardening, horticulture, and the natural world
• Experience teaching and delivering programs, public tours, and/or public speaking
• High level of organization, time management, flexibility, and ability to handle situations in a professional manner
• Comfortable engaging and working with youth of different ages
• Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team
• Flexibility to work a variety of hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events, as needed
• Attendance for all major events is required
• Highly motivated self-starter, and a team player with energy, positivity, and flexibility who is interested in public education
• Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively and as part of a team
• Must demonstrate full computer proficiency, including Google Suite
