Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this teacher maximizes the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district‑approved curriculum, documenting progress, addressing students' specific needs, and providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Participate in PPTs and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for students.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies, state and federal authorities, and other agencies as needed.
  • Work with administrators and other staff to ascertain students' abilities and needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
  • Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling, behavioral management support, and acting as liaison between home and school.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, research, and professional meetings, and maintain professional relationships with higher‑learning institutions and the business community.
  • Organize and maintain a comprehensive record‑keeping system for student information provided to prospective colleges and employers as required by district procedures and laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Assist in orienting new teachers and provide in‑service training in guidance.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, aids, supplies, and equipment, and maintain inventory records.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.
Equipment & Travel Requirements
  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of special education principles, theories, testing, and methods.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer networks and software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Physical and Mental Demands

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications
  • Georgia State Certification as an Elementary Education and Special Education Teacher (Elementary Education, SPEC Adapted, SPED General, SPED Cognitive Content Areas).
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or related discipline.
  • Master’s degree in Special Education preferred.
  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
