About the Role:

Job Summary

Creates a calm and healing environment of care through the use of live, acoustic music in various clinical environments using the inherent healing elements of music and sound to enhance the environment for patients vides Live Therapeutic Music (LTM) to help comfort/stabilize patients exhibiting various symptoms of pain, anxiety, agitation, change in condition or transitioning. Must be professional, proactive, collaborative, conscientious, and results-oriented.

Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or other certifications: Certified by a National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians accredited certification program.

  • Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or GED.

  • Minimum Experience: Proficiency in at least one musical instrument.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates musical proficiency on appropriate instrument(s), using the inherent healing elements of music and sound to enhance the environment for patients at NGMC

  • Knows appropriate types of music for specific patient conditions, using the inherent healing elements of music and sound to enhance the environment for patients at NGMC

  • Is familiar with clinical deportment issues, palliative care, monitoring equipment, and legal issues related to providing the service of therapeutic music

  • Plays / sings music at the bedside or other clinical environment, working with patient care staff to identify those who may benefit from therapeutic music

  • Is proficient in his/her primary acoustic instrument

  • Is able to smoothly transition from familiar to unfamiliar music, improvising for extended periods of time as needed to meet patient's changing conditions and needs

  • If dependent on sheet music, is able to regularly observe and maintain focus on patient and monitor in order to recognize subtle changes in patient condition and response to LTM session; then modify LTM as needed to meet patient's current condition

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Provides own instrument.

  • Is able to transport, carry, move, and set up own instrument and accessory equipment quickly and without assistance.

  • Communicates appropriately with patients, families, and medical personnel, demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of patients and their families.

  • Accepts direction from supervisors and clinical staff.

  • Works without supervision when necessary.

  • Provides LTM as referred or requested to meet patient needs.

  • Documents patient sessions through NGMC electronic health record. Where patients are connected to monitors, the CCTM shall record pre / post session vital signs of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and O2 saturation percentage, then note observable changes in patient's symptoms and/or physiologic or emotional condition.

  • Takes advantage of continuing education opportunities, keeping abreast of current literature and programmatic developments in the field of therapeutic music.

  • Reports any change in patient condition to the shift primary nurse or the nurse in charge.

  • Musts have an optimistic and positive demeanor, excellent oral and written communication skills, good intuition, and be able to adapt to changing priorities and display good, sound judgment with a sense of humor.

  • Maintains daily program statistics and provides data to Coordinator of Therapeutic Music Program (CTMP).

  • As possible and needed, assists with special events or holiday activities.

  • Shares behavioral observations of patients and families with shift primary RN and healthcare team.

  • Is able to prioritize and work independently with patients and families.

  • Demonstrates multigenerational and multicultural awareness.

  • Performs other TMP program duties as requested periodically by supervisor.
