Job DescriptionThis position is designated as safety-sensitive. As such, a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening are mandatory. The incumbent will also be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout the duration of employment. Performs difficult skilled work in repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and other gasoline equipment, including diagnosis, repair and preventive maintenance activities.
Job DutiesPerforms complex skilled mechanic work including the repair, adjustment and maintenance of motor vehicles and construction/landscape equipment both gasoline and diesel-powered. Performs general repairs and overhaul work on internal combustion engines (regular and electronic ignition systems) and all equipment components and accessories (brake systems – drum, disc, air; alternator charging systems, hydraulics, differentials, air conditioning, electrical systems, etc.). Performs routine scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, changing oil and filters, changing air filters, mount, balancing, and rotating tires, transmission fluid checks, etc.
Operates test equipment in detecting mechanical defects in vehicles and equipment. Make decisions determining repair or replacement of defective units or relates parts. Repairs various specialty equipment such as power mowers, air compressors and pneumatic accessories, pumps, and related machinery and small equipment. Travel to job sites to diagnose and/or repair vehicles/equipment; tows to shop as needed. Conducts inspections, road tests vehicles, completes and maintains vehicle/equipment records.
Coordinates service station operations for providing equipment with gasoline, diesel fuel and oil. Performs emergency repairs on all types of equipment. Keeps Maintenance Shop cleaned, stocked, and maintained. Trains employees in proper use and service of vehicles and equipment. Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience: High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with training in auto mechanics. Three years mechanical experience. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above. Licenses and Certifications: ASE Certification Preferred. Valid Class C driver's license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for repairing, overhauling and maintaining automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of operating principles of internal combustion engines. Knowledge of principles of hydraulics and electrical and mechanical systems related to gasoline and diesel equipment operation. Ability to interpret diagrams related to automotive/equipment repairs. Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. Knowledge of and skill in welding. Skill in use of hand tools. Ability and knowledge of working with computers and/or tablets to process paperwork, research repair guides and order parts.
Ability to operate diagnostic and test equipment and utilize test data to determine mechanical defects and corrective measures. Ability to follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
