Position Summary:
The youth sports referee is responsible for officiating Y games, in a way that creates both a controlled and a learning environment. The referee must be knowledgeable of the game in which he/she is refereeing, and able to relay that knowledge to the children in our programs. Must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit community service organization.
Works with limited supervision.
Essential Functions:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrate specific sport skills to the participants
- Referees will be expected to referee youth games, keeping youth safe and the games under control.
- This position also requires referees to act professionally and to serve as role models for the participants.
- This position requires that referees communicate with adult coaches to ensure games start in a timely manner.
- Officiate games and competitions to maintain standards of play and to ensure game rules are observed
- Judge performances in competition in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results
- Inspect equipment to ensure safety of participants
- Arrive early to welcome participants and their families
- Develops connections with parents, resulting in development of friendships and Y advocates and volunteers
- Keep first aid kit and whistle on hand at all times
- Encourage participants in social adjustments, desirable habits and attitudes, and individual achievements
- Keep area clean, neat and organized
- Attend YMCA provided training

Qualifications:
- High school diploma preferred.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
- Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Previous coaching or refereeing experience required
Physical Demands:
Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
