Job SummaryUnder broad supervision, provide advanced level technical support in transportation maintenance, construction, planning, utilities, surveying, environmental or traffic-related areas. Perform skilled labor maintaining highways and right-of-way assets, operating heavy equipment and conducting preventive maintenance.
JobSpecific Duties
Operate heavy equipment—including motor grader, small excavator, asphalt paver, lowboy, and related machinery—to complete assigned tasks. Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment. Respond to emergency situations affecting the state route system during and after normal working hours. Provide day-to-day supervision of crew or sub-unit as directed.
Qualifications State Entry Qualifications- High school diploma or GED and one year of experience at a comparable position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of maintenance activities or two years of experience operating motorized equipment in highway construction and maintenance.
- Possession of a Class B CDL.
- Successful completion of MSD Level 1-3.
Minimum Qualifications for External Candidates
- Two years of experience performing roadway maintenance.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B minimum).
- Experience operating and performing preventive maintenance on equipment such as backhoes, farm tractors, forklifts, rubber-tired loaders, etc.
- Experience gathering data (work location, labor, equipment, materials) to document completed work.
- Ability to serve as the primary Equipment Operator, performing assigned maintenance activities and preventive maintenance on machinery such as motor graders, bulldozers, excavators, loaders, asphalt pavers, lowboys, dump trucks, etc.
- Ability to operate power and hand tools.
- Proven experience with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Experience planning, completing, and documenting routine maintenance work.
- Physical ability to perform the position’s requirements and work in adverse weather.
- Availability to work emergencies outside normal hours.
- Commitment to providing quality customer service.
- Ability to provide guidance and constructive feedback.
- Adaptability to changing situations and work plans.
- Ability to work with diverse backgrounds and resolve problems.
- High work ethic and commitment to work.
- Analytical ability to generate and evaluate alternatives and recommend solutions based on facts, policy, and procedure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Experience operating a truck with a lowboy trailer.
- Leadership and guidance of lower-level employees in equipment operation and preventive maintenance, including training.
