Title: Surgical Assistant
Practice: Northern Virginia Oral Surgery
Location: Gainesville, VA
Hours: Please note working hours may vary based on office needs.
Position PurposeThe surgical assistant ensures compassionate, effective, and efficient delivery of high‑quality clinical care. The role supports oral surgeons during procedures, maintains workflow in a fast‑paced environment, monitors patient vital signs, assists with postoperative care, and documents encounters accurately.
Responsibilities- Ensure patients receive highest quality care and service.
- Communicate with patients in person and by phone in a friendly, professional manner.
- Maintain positive relationships among patients, staff, and surgeons.
- Assist oral surgeons during procedures and prepare instruments and materials.
- Support a clean, professional environment: maintain operatories, supplies, equipment, and compliance with company policies.
- Monitor patient vital signs during procedures and provide support as needed.
- Assist with postoperative education and follow‑up instructions.
- Document patient encounters and surgical procedures accurately.
- Promote teamwork, efficient workflow, and exceptional patient care.
- Attend and participate in regular team meetings.
- Adhere to best practices, established protocols, and highest patient safety standards.
- Support monthly office checks, including:
- Crash carts
- Fire extinguishers
- Emergency preparedness attestations
- X‑ray unit calibration
- Omni‑cam calibration
- Drug book and controlled‑substance inventory accuracy
- Oxygen tank status
- Invoices for controlled substances
- Adherence to controlled‑substance safety protocols
- High school diploma or equivalent (some college preferred).
- Previous clinical experience: oral surgery assistant or dental assistant preferred; training will be provided.
- Basic Life Support certification (training provided if not current).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Analytical and detail‑oriented.
- Initiative and sound judgment; able to work independently.
- Positive attitude, change advocate, able to lead by example.
- Strong knowledge of oral surgery procedures.
- Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
- Commitment to highest standards of patient care and safety.
- Fast‑paced dental office environment.
- Overtime may be required occasionally.
- Some travel for training and job functions.
- Safety procedures required, including X‑ray protection.
- Potentially long hours standing.
