Job Summary

This position develops and implements effective instructional practices based on students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitors its progress, and promotes a collaborative relationship with school staff and parents to foster inclusive practices.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assumes the responsibilities of a special‑education teacher as outlined in Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 561.01‑1.
  • Develops IEPs, plans curriculum, constructs individualized lesson plans, and prepares instructional materials aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and students’ learning styles.
  • Serves as manager of students with disabilities and instructs them in a variety of settings to access the general education curriculum across the continuum.
  • Utilizes teaching and support models (consult, push‑in, pull‑out, small group, co‑teaching) in accordance with student IEPs.
  • Participates in school‑based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to plan instruction and accommodations, ensuring grade‑level access and providing Tier 2/3 interventions when needed.
  • Coordinates resources to support specially designed instruction and accommodations.
  • Collects IEP data and provides quarterly progress reports to families.
  • Implements diverse teaching strategies (hands‑on, student interaction, lecture, group work) and integrates technology into instruction.
  • Employs assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  • Motivates students, reinforces learning, monitors functioning levels, and provides continuous feedback.
  • Designs behavior‑management plans using positive behavioral supports and participates in Behavioral Intervention Plans.
  • Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for eligibility and progress.
  • Participates in staff, department, and special‑education committee meetings as required.
  • Maintains required record‑keeping systems and the special‑education component of Student Education Records.
  • Completes a 30‑hour staff‑development requirement and attends additional professional development activities.
  • Provides services or teaches courses in both general and special education settings as dictated by student IEPs (e.g., reading, math, life and social skills).
  • Collaborates with general‑education teachers during co‑teaching models to ensure accommodations, curriculum coordination, and student progress.
  • Consults with general‑education teachers on instructional and behavioral strategies.
  • Notifies general‑education teachers of required accommodations and modifications.
  • Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the school.

Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree.

Certification

  • Virginia teaching certificate with endorsements in the area of disability served; conditional license may be granted while working toward complete endorsement (minimum six semester hours per year).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing education of students with disabilities.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The work is performed in a standard indoor and outdoor environment. Essential functions may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including unpleasant weather, building conditions, and uneven terrain.
