Job Summary

This position develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). It develops, implements, and monitors IEPs in collaboration with parents and other IEP team members, promoting inclusive practices.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assume the responsibilities of a special education teacher, including those listed in the Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 561.01-1.
  • Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), plan curriculum, develop individualized lesson plans, and prepare instructional materials that reflect an understanding of learning styles and needs.
  • Instruct students in all areas specified by the IEP.
  • Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques (hands‑on, student interaction, lecture, group work, etc.) to present instructional content.
  • Plan, integrate, and utilize technology for classroom instruction.
  • Utilize assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  • Work with students to increase motivation, provide consistent reinforcement, conduct continuous assessment of learning levels, and give continuous feedback.
  • Develop and implement a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with the IEP using positive behavioral supports.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
  • Administer, interpret, and report standardized test results for evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education.
  • Participate in staff, department, and special education committee meetings as required.
  • Maintain a system of record keeping and data collection in accordance with required procedures, as outlined in the Special Education Manual.
  • Compile and maintain the special education component of the Student Education Record.
  • Complete the 30‑hour staff development requirement stipulated by Prince William County Public Schools.
  • Participate in specialized staff development activities to improve job‑related skills and apply best practices working with students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate in a co‑teaching situation with a general education classroom teacher to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, ensure implementation of accommodations, provide curriculum coordination, and evaluate the student’s progress.
  • Consult with general education teachers regarding instructional and behavioral strategies for assigned students in general education classes.
  • Inform general education teachers of accommodations and modifications required by the students’ IEPs.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher assistants or other volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Successful Performance
  • Knowledge of and adherence to federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing education of students with disabilities.
Education Requirements
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Preferred:
    Master’s Degree.
Experience Requirements

Equivalent to at least Type Area or Field (not specified).

Certification and License Requirements
  • Virginia teaching certificate with endorsements in the area of disability served.
  • If lacking complete endorsement, a conditional license may be granted if the teacher is working toward complete endorsement at a rate of a minimum of six semester hours per year.
Work Environment

The work environment is indoors and outdoors. The role may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including unpleasant weather or building conditions and uneven terrain.
