Position: Planning Engineer (Full-Time) (Onsite 5 days then Hybrid after in Gainesville, VA)

Planning Engineer – Full Time (Onsite then Hybrid, Gainesville, VA)

Location:

On-site 5 days a week in Gainesville, VA for the first 4 months, then hybrid schedule 3 days in office, 2 days remote.

Salary: $125,000 – $160,000 base salary plus bonus.

Responsibilities
  • Perform prudent planning, engineering, operational and economical studies to develop safe, reliable and cost‑effective solutions for designing, constructing, and operating the electrical system.
  • Develop technical standards, specifications and guidelines for internal and external use, and act as a technical resource.
  • Assist in planning, organizing and controlling department activities, proposing system improvements and new facilities.
  • Identify and develop solutions to address system constraints or improvement areas with minimal direction.
  • Issue well‑justified recommendations for the annual capital budget, using engineering analysis software, models and databases.
  • Develop short‑range and long‑range plans for the electrical system, including substations, transmission and distribution construction.
  • Independently design electrical layout and interconnections for data centers, large commercial customers and new subdivisions.
  • Determine protection requirements and limitations through coordination, voltage‑drop, and fault‑current studies; recommend improvements.
  • Develop protective device settings to improve coordination.
  • Review construction work orders for adherence to plans, specifications and safety rules.
  • Facilitate planning with management, engineers, developers and government agencies for load‑growth alignment.
  • Analyze outage data, identify trends and develop root‑cause solutions.
  • Verify the accuracy of GIS and CYME model data.
  • Provide guidance, technical expertise and leadership to junior engineers.
  • Interpret industry standards and regulations, and support regulatory compliance.
  • Follow OSHA, VOSHA and company safety rules.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, publications and professional societies.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required;
    Master’s preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or NCEES EIT certification preferred.
  • Electric utility and substation experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in a multi‑task environment and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of company policies, federal, state and local laws, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer operation.
  • Excellent communication skills at all organizational levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with project management abilities.
  • Experience with planning concepts, utility practices and capital and operational budgeting.
  • Knowledge of power engineering concepts and protective device coordination.
  • Ability to interpret maps, plans, drawings and field data.
