Overview
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is inviting Middle School Science Teachers from public school districts and accredited private educational institutions across the United States and its territories to participate in the NIST Summer Institute Program, which will take place July 6‑July 17, 2026, at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Program DescriptionThe NIST Summer Institute Program is a hands‑on career‑development workshop that enables middle‑school STEM teachers to use resources from the nation’s premier standards and measurement laboratory, NIST. The workshop will provide teachers with instructional materials, ideas, and teaching tools to incorporate into lesson plans and classroom‑based learning modules. Emphasis is placed on the measurement science conducted at NIST, with the goal of helping teachers translate cutting‑edge research into hands‑on activities for their students.
Participants will commit two full continuous weeks—ten workdays from Monday through Friday—between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. EDT, July 6‑July 17, 2026, and must attend in person at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
- Eligible applicants are teachers in public school districts or accredited private educational institutions in the U.S. and its territories who teach middle‑school science subjects.
- All candidates must be U.S. citizens.
- Teachers must be employed for the 2025‑2026 school year to teach STEM subjects at grades six (6), seven (7), or eight (8) in a public or accredited private institution.
- Each teacher must teach general STEM.
- Teachers must be available for the full two‑week commitment described above and must travel to and attend the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, MD.
- Participants will receive a $2,700 travel and housing allowance for teachers traveling from outside the DMV area; teachers must arrange their own travel and lodging and claim the allowance on the first day of the workshop.
- Travel and housing arrangements are the responsibility of the teacher; direct deposit is required for the allowance.
