Summary Description Of Classification
At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The para educator may participate with students in learning activities off school grounds and assist with academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support. The work focuses on facilitating mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards and managing behaviors that impact students’ ability to access the curriculum.
Students at this level may participate in general or specialized instructional settings throughout the day and may be pulled out for individualized or small group reinforcement. The position also performs instructional and classroom management supports and related clerical tasks to support teachers and staff in all classrooms or learning environments. All new para educators are hired at grade 15 and have the opportunity to promote to grade 16 after successfully completing a six‑month probationary period and required training hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds may be required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Outside duty may be required; flexible scheduling and changes of location or program must be accommodated. The para educator must continue planned instructional activities during a teacher’s temporary absence from the classroom and may require specific training to fulfill the role.

- Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies and practices applicable to the assignment, and instructional goals and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools.
- Ability to assist with the implementation of the instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior.
- Ability to exhibit patient behavior and to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff members.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to perform all required tasks.
