Teacher, Special Education (PEP), Diamond ES, 0.5 FTE (260023D)

Wage range: $32,295 to $65,736 based on education and experience.

Summary Description

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Special Requirements

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses address the needs of students with disabilities, particularly behavioral management, including nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs are expected to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge,

Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program.
  • Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
  • Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math when the position is at the elementary level.
  • Knowledge of ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and related state and federal special education policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide instructional support and work effectively with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
  • Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards of the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Education, Training & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years of teaching experience at the level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
  • Certification:
    Meets Maryland State Department of Education requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
