Summary Description

Under the direction of the High School Principal, the resource teacher (RT) provides leadership to departments or subject fields, supports classroom teachers in the instructional program, serves as an instructional role model, and supports the development of a professional learning community within the department and school. The RT observes and analyzes instructional practices related to teachers’ professional growth and evaluation, collaborates with supervisors and colleagues on instructional issues, takes a leadership role in the handling of instructional resources, and supports the development of the master schedule.

The RT stays current on content and best practices in the specified subject field and serves as a liaison to the central office on subject matter and instructional issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of instructional strategies and content knowledge for specified subject field(s). Ability to work effectively with adults in a professional learning environment; observe and analyze classroom teaching skills and assess delivery of curriculum to students; excellent oral and written communication, organizational, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS), and the Supporting Services (SEIU) Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Training, and Experience

A master’s degree or master’s equivalency (MEQ) in an applicable field from an accredited college or university is required. A minimum of five years of successful secondary teaching is required, with three of those years in the appropriate subject field; one year in MCPS is preferred. Experience with instructional leadership, curriculum implementation, and professional development is desirable. Completion of Observing and Analyzing Teaching (OAT 1) by the beginning of the second year of assignment and OAT 2 by the end of the second year in assignment is required.

Certificate/license: meets Maryland state certification requirements in the appropriate field of education.

Special Requirements

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.
