Salary Range$64,591 to $131,472 (based on education & experience)
Summary DescriptionUnder direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. Works in collaboration with the general education teacher, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands are as required by the duties. The role requires attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
Teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific MCPS courses, particularly in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis intervention, and support behavioral interventions.
Comprehensive knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum, special education program, IEP processes, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments. Ability to provide instructional support, adapt instructional programs and materials, and communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents/guardians. Knowledge of and application of the six performance standards for the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System.
Education& Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment.
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
- Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
- Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis intervention.
- Teachers in identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
