Position: Engineer Technician I/II, Grade 17/18

About The Position

Salary range: $59,897–$71,913 for Engineer Technician I (Grade 17). For Engineer Technician II (Grade 18) the hiring range is $62,328–$89,891. The position may be initially filled as an Engineer Technician I. Once full performance and the minimum proficiency requirements are met, the employee is eligible for promotion to Engineer Technician II.

Who We Are Looking For

MCDOT seeks an Engineer Technician I /II to join its Traffic Signal Engineering team. This entry‑level traffic engineering technician roles focuses on constructing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signal and Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) devices as part of the County's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS). The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, a problem‑solver, highly organized, and possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and customer‑service experience are desired.

What

You’ll Be Doing
  • Prepare traffic signal documents including pole locations, signal indications, phasing, timing, sequence, pavement markings, and intersection signage.
  • Conduct traffic evaluations and field investigations for safety and operational improvements.
  • Coordinate and inspect installation and modification of traffic control devices.
  • Prepare work orders and coordinate with the Transportation Management Center (TMC), Technical Center, and other MCDOT units.
  • Review and comment on traffic signal plans from the Maryland State Highway Administration and engineering consultants, following the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Answer telephone inquiries, letters, and emails, and respond to other agency and citizen requests related to signal operations.
  • Perform field investigations of traffic signal operations.
Essential Status

The selected individual will be considered an Essential Employee. Overtime will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a general emergency or on liberal leave.

Additional Requirements

All employees must complete mandatory training within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe. Work at the Public Safety Communication Center (PSCC) requires a pre‑employment medical history form and a criminal record check/background investigation.

Minimum Qualifications Engineer Technician I

Experience
:
Considerable (three years) experience in an applicable technical field that required applying principles of physical science and mathematics to assist engineers in solving civil, traffic, or environmental engineering problems.

Education
:
Completion of high school or recognized high‑school certificate in Maryland.

Equivalency
:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

License
:
Possession of and maintenance at all times of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence.

Medical & Background
:
Completion of a pre‑employment Medical History Form and a criminal record check/background investigation is required for work at the PSCC.

Engineer Technician II

Experience
:
Thorough (five years) experience in an applicable technical field that required applying principles of physical science and mathematics to solve civil, traffic, fire protection, or environmental engineering problems.

Education
:
Completion of high school or recognized high‑school certificate in Maryland.

Equivalency
:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

License
:
Possession of and maintenance at all times of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence.

Medical & Background
:
Completion of a pre‑employment Medical History Form and a criminal record check/background investigation is required for work at the PSCC.
