Overview
- The Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division of NIST is seeking a Nanofabrication Process Engineer. This NIST associate will work in the CNST Nano Fab in Gaithersburg, Maryland, collaborating with a project team that focuses on integrated photonics, optical metasurfaces, optomechanical systems, quantum devices, or microscopy standards.
- The mission of the Division is to develop and apply nanofabrication processes to build integrated microsystems that advance and disseminate the SI. These microsystems meet the measurement needs of industry, academia, and government, and support critical and emerging technologies in fields such as quantum science, semiconductor manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.
- Collaborative Research:
You will engage in critical reviews with a project team to develop effective nanofabrication solutions for challenging research problems. - Cleanroom Processing:
You will perform cleanroom processes such as electron‑beam lithography, focused‑ion‑beam machining, thin‑film processing, and wafer bonding. - Process Integration:
You will develop and integrate complex sequences of cleanroom processes to successfully realize novel structures, devices, and microsystems.
- NIST Associates:
This nanofabrication process engineer will be hired as a NIST associate working in the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division. - Federal Status: NIST associates are not federal employees, however, U.S. citizens hired as NIST associates have the opportunity to seek longer‑term federal employment.
- Term Duration:
The position is a one‑year term with options to renew.
- Salary Range: $75,000 to $150,000, determined by your experience and qualifications.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a similar field.
- At least one year of relevant professional experience.
- A graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a similar field.
- At least three years of relevant professional experience.
