Job Description & How to Apply Below

Hybrid (Gaithersburg, MD at least 3x per week)

Our growing, collaborative, and supportive tax practice is looking for a Senior Tax Accountant with Trusts & Estates experience to help high-net-worth individuals and their families navigate complex tax laws, minimize burdens, and smoothly transfer wealth to the next generation—all while enjoying the camaraderie and challenges of getting it right together.

This position offers the opportunity to work directly with clients and their advisors on estate and trust matters, backed by the support of a dedicated team. While you’ll need experience with fiduciary income tax returns, you’ll also gain exposure to individual, business, and nonprofit compliance, including Form 990s for private foundations. You’ll manage client relationships, supervise staff accountants, and be a trusted advisor to families as they plan for the future.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and prepare estate, trust, and fiduciary income tax returns as well as individual and business returns.
  • Review and prepare fiduciary accounting for trusts, estates, and guardian ships in accordance with applicable statutes and court rules.
  • Ensure multi-state compliance with probate, inheritance, estate, and fiduciary income tax statutes and regulations, including state-of-situs variations.
  • Conduct estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax planning for high-net-worth clients, including wealth transfer strategies.
  • Provide consulting on complex trust, estate, and individual tax matters, including year-end and multi-year projections (cash flow, estimated tax, and distribution planning).
  • Provide estate and trust administration support, ensuring compliance with federal and state tax laws by situs.
  • Supervise and mentor staff accountants, reviewing work and guiding client engagements.
  • Research complex estate, gift, and trust tax issues and clearly document findings and recommendations.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with families, beneficiaries, and their advisors.
Why work here?
  • Careers aren’t one-size-fits-all. We’ll partner with you to shape a path that fits your strengths and interests. When you’re engaged, you do your best work—and what’s best for you is best for us.
  • Lanigan Ryan has been growing every year since our founding, offering stability and ongoing (personalized) growth opportunities for our team members.
  • Initiative is rewarded! If you have a new project idea that you believe would benefit the firm, we want to hear it.
  • We take our bonding opportunities very seriously – from happy hours to firm-sponsored vacations to enviable locations, like beachfront Jamaican resorts and all-inclusive Cancun properties. It’s these deep connections among our team members that create unparalleled bonds and team spirit, both in the office, and outside of it, ensuring we can collaborate effectively to create amazing results for our clients.
  • Our firm is team-first, which means that you can rely on your teammates (at all levels) for support in solving problems, learning new skills, and meeting deadlines. You don’t need to worry about outperforming the person across the hall. When you win, we all win.
  • We love to learn and to share that knowledge – with each other and our clients. Asking and answering questions is encouraged.
  • We know the importance of investing in our people – our firm supports your professional development through in‑house leadership training, professional conferences, and firm reimbursements for professional organizational dues.
  • We want excellence – and we’ll help each other achieve it. We don’t just churn out work; we make sure the work we complete is done correctly, following a best practice approach.
