Overview

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is an accredited all‑hazards emergency response agency that serves over one million residents across 500 square miles. The senior information technology specialist will work in the Technology Services Section, Data Systems team, supporting mission‑critical data applications that enable emergency operations, analytics, and decision‑making.

Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain advanced data applications for emergency operations and decision‑making.
  • Manage complex projects involving data integration, analytics, and system optimization.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to implement innovative technology solutions that enhance service delivery.
  • Ensure data security, reliability, and compliance with industry standards.
Knowledge
  • Enterprise IT systems, application development, database design, and integration.
  • Relational databases (SQL Server), ETL processes, reporting tools (SSRS, Power BI), and data modeling.
  • Programming in C#, ASP.NET, Python, and scripting for automation.
  • Public safety systems such as CAD/RMS, mobile data systems, and mission‑critical applications.
  • Networking and infrastructure: LAN/WAN, Windows Server, Active Directory, and identity management.
  • Cybersecurity: security standards, vulnerability mitigation, and disaster recovery/high availability strategies.
  • IT governance, data privacy, and regulatory requirements relevant to public safety.

  • Technical problem‑solving and rapid issue resolution.
  • Application development, testing, and deployment of secure, scalable applications and APIs.
  • Data analysis and reporting to support operational decision‑making.
  • Project management, prioritization, and on‑time delivery of IT projects.

  • Effective collaboration with cross‑functional teams, vendors, and public safety personnel.

  • Independent judgment to propose new methods, policies, and solutions without constant supervision.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adherence to security protocols.
  • Continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in one or more areas of the information technology field, such as programming, systems analysis, or database design and management.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field.
  • Equivalency of education and experience may be accepted in lieu of a full degree (e.g., data engineering certifications). Training and/or certifications may also be accepted.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Preferred: possession of a valid driver’s license from the state of residence.
  • Completion of a Medical History Review with drug/alcohol screening.
Preferred Criteria and Interview Preferences
  • Five or more years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server, T‑SQL, SSRS, SSIS, Power BI; data modelling, ETL, and performance tuning for large operational datasets.
  • Experience in application development in C#/ASP.NET, Python, modern API development (REST), and scripting for automation.
  • Platform and identity experience with Microsoft Azure or Power Platform, AWS cloud platforms, and SharePoint/Teams integration.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified:
    Azure Data Engineer Associate; AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty or Solutions Architect;
    Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer;
    Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate/Professional.
  • Practical experience with vulnerability mitigation, hardening standards, and enterprise security practices.
