Community School of Maryland School Nurse
The Community School of Maryland (CSM) is a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) licensed private school located at the Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC). Gaithersburg campus. The school provides educational services for children ages 7-21 years. The CSM School Nurse is responsible for coordinating, planning and providing direct services to students who attend school. The School Nurse functions as an integral part of the school's multi-disciplinary team bridging the gap between health, wellness and learning.
The focus of the School Nurse is on early detection and correction of health problems and the fostering of effective communication and collaboration between parents/residential providers and the school health care and educational team. The School Nurse also serves as a Case Manager/Delegating Nurse and is responsible for ensuring the appropriate implementation of medication administration and other delegated nursing tasks through continuous oversight and competency evaluation of unlicensed staff.
Minimum Qualification:
- Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Maryland
- Should have or be qualified for Case Management/Delegating Nurse certification in the State of Maryland
- Current CPR/First Aide/AED Training
- Minimum one (1) year RN experience with background in School Health, Community Health Pediatric nursing preferred.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provides health services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in the individual student.
- Promoting an optimal level of wellness of students by providing preventive health services to facilitate the students' optimal physical, mental emotional and social growth and development.
- Identify problems/disabilities and provide such services as case coordination, health education, referring and care, in order to help prevent serious health problems and manage current chronic conditions.
- Promotes optimal health status of students by obtaining and evaluating health history, health assessments and other pertinent health information.
- Providers current and up-to-date information for the use of school personnel on such subjects as the growth and development patterns of children, accident prevention and communicable disease.
- Ensures that all MSDE requirements, such as immunization reports, are properly prepared and forwarded in a timely manner.
- Provide direct services to students using the nursing process to provide care in accordance with current nursing/medical standards, relevant statutes and regulations.
- Manages and controls acute and chronic disease. Carries out policy and procedures for full control of communicable diseases in collaboration with the Maryland Department of Health.
- Provides first aid for illness or injury to students and documents nursing assessment and treatment in the student record.
- Establishes Health Management Plan(s) for students with special health care needs/conditions and updates plan as needed.
- Reviews and monitors student immunization status. Makes appropriate referrals/recommendations related to out-of-compliant students, when indicated.
- Providers health teaching and counseling.
- Maintains comprehensive health records on each student and maintain record of all services rendered.
- Administers medication and performs procedures according to MSDE/MBON policies and procedures.
- Performs delegating nurse responsibilities to unlicensed personnel (CMT's) as outlined by MSDE and the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON). Such responsibilities include staff training, supervision, medication administration observation and competency evaluation of all unlicensed personnel
Competency Attainment:
The CSM School Nurse reports to the Nurse Manager for nursing related issues and to the school administrator (Principal) for non-nursing/medical concerns.
