PREP Research Associate
CHIPS Funded Project
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST encourages collaboration with academic researchers on mutually interested projects, requiring that such institutions hold a PREP award. Employees will perform technical work supporting scientific research collaborations.
Research Title:
Biointerface Metrology for CMOS Sensors
The work will entail:
The project involves developing measurement metrology to characterize biological films on semiconductor substrates, aiding in creating more robust biosensors for life sciences applications. The project requires collaboration with NIST material scientists and external stakeholders to transfer measurements to industry, supporting the bioelectronic sensing and CHIPS metrology programs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Utilize surface functionalization techniques such as thiol or silane chemistry to develop robust biotic-abiotic interfaces.
- Design, assemble, and characterize biotic-abiotic interfaces using biomolecules like DNA or proteins.
- Design experiments and test fixtures to support surface functionalization studies.
- Perform measurements of samples from stakeholders using vapor deposition.
- Analyze sensor data with MATLAB, Mathematica, or similar software to detect biomarkers.
- Present results internally and to external stakeholders.
- Ensure proper archiving of results, protocols, software, and documentation.
Qualifications
- A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- At least 6 years of experience with biological materials like DNA.
- At least 3 years of experience with surface science techniques such as EIS or CV.
- Familiarity with electronic measurements and instrumentation.
- Ability to prototype analysis tools for data reduction and time-series analysis.
- Strong communication skills.
