Assistant Research Scientist; PREP

General Description

PREP Research Associate for NIST Hurricane Maria Program and Community Resilience Program.

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requiring that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas.

Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research

Title:

Research Associate for NIST Hurricane Maria and Community Resilience Programs.

• Quantitative and qualitative analysis of data.
• Narrative and technical writing.
• Communication of results through reports, other publications, and presentations.
• Support the development of data collection instruments (e.g., surveys and interview guides).
• Support the development of documentation required for approvals (e.g., Institutional Review Board, Office of Management and Budget Paperwork Reduction Act).
• Research and publications on related topics including organizational resilience, community recovery, data collection following disasters, and measurement using social science methods.

• A Master’s degree in geography, sociology, or a related social science field.
• At least 3 years of relevant expertise in research related to community and organizational resilience, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and hazard impacts.
• Experience on interdisciplinary research teams.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to develop scientific presentations and publications.
• Prior experience working on disaster studies preferred.
• U.S. citizens preferred.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
