Position Title
Emergency Communications and Community Resilience Measurement Research Associate
SalarySalary
: $95,000 - $119,000 a year
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. The associate will support two related efforts:
- Hurricane Maria National Construction Safety Team Investigation:
Public Response to Emergency Communications Project – Investigate the role of emergency communications in public response during and after Hurricane Maria. The associate will revise the Emergency Communications Project report and the NCST investigation report, finalize datasets of public messages surrounding the hurricane, and contribute to peer‑reviewed journal articles on household decision‑making. - Community Resilience Assessment Methodology Project – Develop a simplified, science‑based community resilience assessment methodology for communities of any size. The associate will aid in indicator development, statistical analysis, econometrics, scale development, validation studies, and communicate results in various formats.
- Carry out statistical analyses and interpret results.
- Compile and clean large datasets.
- Determine methods to analyze complex data for validation.
- Develop innovative methods and research directions that support project goals.
- Co‑author reports on analysis results.
- Present results at internal meetings and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
- Ensure that results, protocols, datasets, and documentation are archived or transmitted to the larger organization.
- PhD in Urban Planning or a Social Science discipline.
- Seven years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Familiarity with publicly available data sources.
- Ability to work with complex data at varying spatial‑temporal scales.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship preferred.
