PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas.
Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Dimensional Calibration Development / Dimensional Calibration Traceability
The work will entailThe candidate will use their expertise to support gage block and other dimensional calibration services s will require the candidate to maintain NIST dimensional reference masters, and when appropriate perform measurements for internal research efforts.
US Citizen preferred
Key Responsibilities- Opening, cleaning and distributing customer gages to NIST technical professionals for calibration.
- Performing measurements of NIST reference gage blocks masters and comparing them to historical measurements, under supervision.
- Acquire, calibrate and place into service, with supervision, reference gage block masters.
- Learn and perform gage block measurements using optical interferometry.
- A Bachelor's of Science in Science or Engineering
- 11 months of relevant experience
- Familiarity with NIST's gage block calibrations methods and procedures
- Familiarity with NIST's quality system requirements
