Schedule:
40 Hours per week
Under general supervision, drives and operates single-axle commercial weight vehicles and operates equipment.
- Drives commercial weight, single-axle vehicles including dump, street flusher, water, sludge, and tool trucks, and refuse collection packers.
- Salts and plows roads during snow emergencies.
- Operates and tows equipment such as tractors with mowing or other attachments, forklifts, stump grinders, rubber tire loaders, and rollers.
- Loads, unloads, or assists in loading and unloading equipment, tools, and materials.
- Transports crews and/or materials to and from jobs.
- Performs various manual labor tasks.
- Is responsible for equipment and tools assigned to vehicle.
- Installs special adapters and fixtures to equipment as work requires.
- Performs preventive and routine maintenance on trucks and/or equipment.
- Makes minor repairs to equipment and helps mechanics with major repairs as required.
- Keeps simple records and logs.
- Participates in safety related training including confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials.
- Leads and instructs other workers.
- Trains and assists in the operation of Equipment Operator level and unfamiliar Laborer II level equipment and vehicles.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license.
- Possession of a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
- All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment.
- Site Maintenance (Seeding, mowing, erosion control, etc.)
- Class A CDL with an Air Brake Endorsement
- Current work experience operating a large dual wheel, single axle dump truck that includes performing manual labor tasks.
Non-Maryland residents must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
Physical and Environmental ConditionsThe work of this classification entails heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic, working in trenches, and adverse weather.
Examination ProcedureQualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as submitted on their application and supplemental questionnaire. Applicants are advised to state the dates, duties and responsibilities of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.
All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications may be required to demonstrate their ability to operate a large dual wheel, single axle dump truck.
Employees in this classification may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice. Some positions may be designated as Emergency/Essential.
