Position: Building Maintenance/ Grounds Main Campus, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., Galesburg

Purpose/Position Code/Classification/Level/Work Relationships

  • To maintain the physical functions, clean and appealing educational facility.

  • Reports to:

    Assistant Coordinator of Building Maintenance & Assistant Coordinator of Grounds Services
  • Principal working relationships:
    Vice President of Institutional Resources, Director of Facility Services, Assistant Coordinator of Custodial Services, staff, faculty and students.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and service all HVAC systems.
  • Maintain and service the plumbing systems.
  • Maintain and service the electrical systems.
  • To be available to work in emergency situations or off schedule hours when necessary.
  • Paint as required.
  • Moving of furniture and equipment.
  • Repairs of furniture and equipment
  • The removal of snow, ice and debris from all parking lots, sidewalks, and roads.
  • Mow lawns, trim shrubbery and trees, cut weeds, and maintain landscaping.
  • Service and repair all equipment used in the ground maintenance.
  • Keep a valid pesticide license so chemicals can be used when needed.
  • Keep a valid forklift operator license.
  • Moving of equipment to and from storage.
  • Maintain the yard and other exterior lighting.
  • To be available to work overtime and off schedule hours when necessary.
  • Utilize Sandburg vehicles/trailer to pick-up flat metal stock and deliver scrap metal coupons to the steel supplier on a weekly or as needed basis. Also pick-up donated pipe from area suppliers as needed.
  • Service fleet vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate:

  • Inventory of parts needed.
  • Inventory of air filters needed.
  • Maintenance functions in the absence of the Manager of Construction Projects & facilities
  • Painting of curbing.
  • Installation and maintenance of traffic control signs.
  • Placement of and repair of roadside informational signs.
  • Assist with:

  • Set up of furniture and equipment for special functions.
  • Departmental assessment and establishment of key performance indicators based on the strategic plan.
  • Risk-Management and Loss-Prevention Activities:

  • Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college risk-management program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
  • Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Risk-Management Committee.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems, including internal/external call boxes.
  • Carry an operational radio/walkie-talkie at all times.
  • Minimum Necessary Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Work-related experience required.
  • Must successfully demonstrate, through work experience, the ability to accomplish this type of work.
  • Good working knowledge of electrical, mechanical and plumbing skills.
  • Should be experienced in the use of power hand tools as well as all tools used regularly in a building maintenance program.
  • Should have the ability to understand the inter-relationships between the various aspects of building operating systems.
  • Should have a working knowledge of the basic code requirements relating to building maintenance.
  • Should have the ability to trouble shoot the facilities operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and software.
  • Must demonstrate ability to read instructions on chemical use and dilution rates.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The ability to communicate successfully with clients of all ages, socio-economic status, sex, or race.
  • Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
  • Physical Requirements to Perform Job Functions:

  • Must be able to do arduous work in all weather conditions.
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Should be able to climb ladders
  • Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Vision – with/without correction.
  • Hearing – perceiving the nature of sounds with/without correction.
