Overview

The Department of Public Works seeks to fill one (1) position in the Maintenance Worker classification (Pay Range 16) in the Water Division’s Meter Shop. This is a permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $24.84 (Step

A).

The pay range for this position is $24.84 - $31.79.

General Description of the Position

Regular duties include installing, maintaining, and reading the City’s residential and commercial water meters; locating underground water systems and valves; assisting in repairs, maintenance, and upgrades of the City’s water distribution system; turning on and off commercial and residential water services and related tasks as may be assigned. The successful candidate must be able to work assigned weekends and overtime when required.

An Illinois drinking water operator certification is preferred. Additional duties may include functioning as the back-up to front office staff, answering telephones, responding to customer service issues, and coordinating work orders.

Education, Experience, and

Required Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma (or GED) is required.
  • Applicants must possess a valid Illinois Class ‘B’ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement at the time of hire or must obtain one within six months of hire.
  • Must have the ability to read blueprints, drawings, and schematics, and operate GIS equipment to locate underground utilities.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems is required.
  • Candidates must have the ability to carry out assignments with little or no supervision and be able to understand and follow instructions.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers and the general public.
  • Must adhere to city safety policies and departmental operating procedures.
  • Previous customer service experience is preferred.
  • Ability to be on a 24-hour call in case of emergency municipal procedures.
  • An Illinois Water Supply Operator Class ‘D’ (or higher) certification is preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis and be able to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. Must be able to climb a ladder, lift, walk, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, reach, and sit. As many of the job duties are outside, the applicant must be able to tolerate manual labor performed in varied and extreme weather conditions.
