Position: Middle School History Teacher Middle School · Full-Time

Sumner Academy is now accepting applications for an experienced Middle History School Teacher for the 2026‑2027 school year with an approximate start date of July 23, 2026.

We seek an engaging and knowledgeable Middle School History Teacher to inspire students in grades 5‑8 through dynamic, inquiry‑based instruction. The ideal candidate will foster critical thinking, historical empathy, and strong communication skills while creating an inclusive classroom environment that values varying perspectives. Responsibilities include designing and delivering curriculum, assessing student progress, and collaborating with colleagues to support the academic and social development of all learners.

This faculty position will work closely with the other middle school teachers and report to the Director of Middle School.

Our Middle School is a close‑knit community of educators and students. We look to teach the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally, and guide them in their learning.

Qualified candidates will have earned a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Prior teaching experience is required.

Confidence, character, and a love for learning grow daily in Sumner Academy's Middle School, which consists of grades 5th through 8th. In close partnership with families, teachers work to understand, guide, challenge, and nurture their students as they learn to think creatively and work cooperatively and independently.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Abides by Sumner Academy’s Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Sumner Academy’s Mission Statement and Faculty handbook
  • Be on campus from 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM daily
  • Teach middle school students utilizing a rotating schedule with time for enrichment courses.
  • Participate in field trips, service learning activities, and other grade‑level activities
  • Attend to all required grading and conferencing responsibilities
  • Become familiar with Sumner Academy’s technology, both hardware and software, and learn to incorporate technology effectively
  • Work closely with other Middle School and Related Arts Teachers
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
  • Education – must have a college degree
  • Should have at least two years of experience in teaching students.
  • Technical competency – basic/intermediate/advanced understanding and ability to use computers and technology (e.g., Google Documents, Microsoft Windows and Office products, basic office equipment, projectors, mechanical equipment, etc.)
  • Communication – well developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co‑workers, parents, alumnae, volunteers, and the public
  • Personal characteristics – essentials are adaptability, honesty, self‑reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem‑solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality
  • Must complete background screening and verification
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate, occasionally works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate
  • Regularly uses close and distance vision, works at a computer screen for extended periods, ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the office/classroom or work at a desk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 30/50 lbs. across the campus/classroom/office
  • Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts. Stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ability to occasionally work flexible hours to support before and after‑school or weekend events
