Associate Finance Director

Full Time Gallatin, TN, US

Salary: $70,012.80 Annually

The Associate Finance Director serves as a senior leader within the Finance Department and provides direct support to the Finance Director in all areas of financial management, compliance, reporting, and department operations. This position is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day accounting functions, assisting with audits, grant financial management, budgeting, internal controls, payroll backup, and supervision of finance staff.

The Associate Finance Director must be capable of performing the essential duties of the Finance Director as needed and serves as acting department leader in the Director’s absence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Financial Operations & Accounting
  • Assists in overseeing daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, general ledger activity, and reconciliations.
  • Reviews journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly close processes for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Monitors cash flow and assists with banking relationships and treasury functions.
  • Ensures financial transactions are properly recorded in accordance with GAAP and agency policies.
  • Assists with preparation of monthly financial statements and management reports.
Grants & Compliance
  • Oversees grant billing, reimbursements, draws, and financial reporting for federal, state, and local funding sources.
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with Uniform Guidance, grant regulations, and agency internal controls.
  • Monitors restricted funds, budget line items, and allowable costs.
  • Supports preparation of schedules and documentation for audits, monitoring visits, and fiscal reviews.
  • Assists with corrective action responses and implementation related to audit findings, if applicable.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
  • Assists with annual agency budget preparation and program budgets.
  • Monitors budget‑to‑actual performance and identifies variances for leadership review.
  • Supports forecasting, financial modeling, and long‑range planning initiatives.
  • Provides financial guidance to department directors and program leadership.
Leadership & Supervision
  • Assists in supervising Finance Department staff and assigning workflow priorities.
  • Provides training, coaching, and support to finance team members.
  • Promotes efficiency, accountability, and customer service within the department.
  • Serves as acting Finance Director during absences or as delegated.
Other Duties
  • Participates in leadership meetings, board finance reporting preparation, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Recommends process improvements, automation opportunities, and strengthened controls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Finance Director or Executive Director.
Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred. Candidates without a CPA must be willing and able to obtain certification within 24 months of hire.
Experience
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Nonprofit, governmental, or grant‑funded accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Audit preparation or external audit experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of grant compliance and nonprofit fund accounting preferred.
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare accurate reports.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software systems.
