Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and one year of full-time professional level experience in probation/parole, counseling, social work, investigative, or legal fields.

Substitution of Experience for

Education:

Full‑time relevant professional experience, including law enforcement experience, may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year‑for‑year basis.

Substitution of Graduate Course Work for

Experience:

Graduate course credit earned in social science, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or law (up to 36 graduate quarter hours) may substitute for one year of the required experience.

• Willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
• At least 18 years of age on the date of application
• Citizen of the United States
• Good moral character as determined by investigation
• Complete a criminal history disclosure form and agree to release all records involving criminal history
• Supply a fingerprint sample as prescribed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
• Have no felony convictions or domestic assault convictions, and no dishonorable discharge from any branch of the armed forces
• Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician consistent with the ADA and related to the essential functions of the position
• Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional consistent with the ADA and related to the essential functions of the position
• Submit to and pass a pre‑employment screening test for illegal drugs
• Hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment
• Upon appointment, successfully complete all additional prescribed courses of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any required online training

Under general direction, the Probation/Parole Officer is responsible for professional probation and parole work of average difficulty, supervising a caseload of offenders. The role involves investigative duties, case management, and liaison responsibilities with courts and other agencies to support compliance with probation conditions.

• Prepare and maintain offenders’ records and reports, identifying criminal activities and background information
• Conduct searches of offender residences, vehicles, and persons; interview probationers and parolees to evaluate progress and compliance with contracts and rehabilitation plans
• Conduct pre‑hearing and pre‑release investigations, testify in court regarding offender backgrounds, recommended sentences, and sentencing conditions
• Act as liaison with judges, court personnel, law enforcement, and other agencies influencing program success
• Interact positively with coworkers and offenders to maintain a respectful and harmonious environment
• Request arrest warrants for non‑compliance; determine appropriate treatment steps using compiled offender information
• Handle offender complaints and grievances promptly and professionally
• Investigate significant offender and staff events to determine incident report requirements and assist in decision‑making processes, using assessment tools to determine risk level
• Develop appropriate sanctions for non‑compliance and design transitional accountability plans, informing offenders of release requirements such as office visits, restitution payments, and educational or employment stipulations
