Construction Inspector / Senior Construction Inspector

The City of Galt is currently accepting applications for the role of Construction Inspector and Senior Construction Inspector. This position involves field inspections of public works improvements, ensuring conformance with applicable federal and state laws, codes, ordinances, plans, specifications, and departmental regulations.

Pay and Additional Compensation

Effective July 1, 2027:

  • Construction Inspector: $38.26 - $46.96 per hour
  • Senior Construction Inspector: $43.45 - $52.80 per hour

Additional pay (upon assignment and eligibility):

  • Longevity Pay – beginning at 10 years of service: 5%; 15 years: 7.5%
  • Bilingual Pay – $100 per month
  • Medical‑in‑lieu – $200 per month employee only, $350 employee plus one, $500 family
  • Incentives – 2.5% to 10% or up to 5% for city‑approved educational courses (Senior only)
  • Cell Phone Stipend – $75 per month (Senior only)
Benefits
  • Home Buying Program – $25,000 interest‑free loan to assist with purchase of a home in Galt city limits
  • Tuition Reimbursement – Up to $4,000 per fiscal year
  • Holiday Pay – Fourteen paid holidays, one floating holiday, thirteen fixed holidays:
    New Years Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
  • Vacation Leave – 80 hours per year for first 4 years; 120 hours after 4 years; 160 hours after 10 years; 200 hours after 15 years; 220 hours after 22 years

  • Vacation Cash Out – Up to 40 hours per year (Construction); up to 80 hours per year (Senior)

Responsibilities
  • Perform field inspections of public works improvements including streets, sidewalks, encroachment, grading, landscaping, traffic control, water and wastewater lines, electrical installations, and other city facilities
  • Verify that construction conforms to plans, specifications, contract provisions, and safe work practices
  • Confere with contractors and developers regarding conformance to standards, explain requirements, and evaluate alternatives
  • Record materials used and work performed; prepare necessary reports for progress payments
  • Issue change orders within guidelines; consult with engineering staff on problems and alternatives
  • Maintain accurate records and files; prepare and maintain daily inspection reports, progress payments, change orders, claims, and other documentation
  • Conduct pre‑construction meetings with contractors and developers
  • Investigate resident complaints; liaise with property owners regarding project schedules, hazards, and inconvenience
  • Schedule service interruptions with minimal interference to properties
  • Prepare standard bid and document forms; prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, correction notices, procedures, and other written material
  • Operate a standard vehicle to travel to multiple work sites and transport equipment as needed
  • Assist in training staff, reviews, and disciplinary actions (Senior only)
  • Plan, assign, direct, and review work of construction inspection staff (Senior only)
  • Monitor operations; identify opportunities for service delivery improvement (Senior only)
  • Provide recommendations to management; implement improvements; prepare reports on operations (Senior only)
  • Consult with public works director, deputy director, and city legal staff on legal aspects (Senior only)
Knowledge and Ability Requirements Construction Inspector
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in public work construction of streets, sidewalks, drainage, water and wastewater lines, streetlights, and related facilities
  • Understanding of public works construction inspection principles and practices
