About the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) at UTMB is a leader in the delivery of advanced respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine services. With 13 faculty and 12 fellows, the Division combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to serve patients across UTMB’s four hospital campuses — Galveston, League City, Clear Lake. PCCSM also maintains a robust presence in Sleep Medicine, offering diagnostic and therapeutic services for sleep-related disorders through the UTMB Sleep Centers.

The ACGME-accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training across all aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows benefit from exposure to diverse patient populations, advanced technologies, and a collaborative learning environment that promotes professional growth and clinical expertise.

Position Summary

UTMB is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. The APP will work collaboratively with physicians to provide comprehensive pulmonary and critical care services across an inpatient setting. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated clinician who values teamwork, education, and quality improvement in an academic environment.

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals with acute and chronic pulmonary conditions, including asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension.
  • Provide inpatient ICU
    , including co-management of critically ill patients, ventilator management, and collaboration with ICU consultants.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, including histories, physical exams, diagnostic testing, and interpretation of results.
  • Provide inpatient care in the intensive care unit (ICU) under physician supervision, including ventilator management and co-management of critically ill patients.
  • Perform or assist with procedures such as thoracentesis, arterial line insertion, central line placement, and other interventions as credentialed and trained.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied health professionals—to coordinate and optimize patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about disease management, treatment plans, and preventive care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, case discussions, and evidence-based practice reviews within the Division.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including respiratory therapy, nursing, radiology, and surgery—for optimal patient outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current licensure (or eligibility) as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of Texas.
  • National certification in an applicable specialty area (e.g., Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP, or NCCPA-certified PA-C).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in pulmonary, critical care, or hospital medicine.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
