The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a dedicated and qualified individual to serve as a Patrol Deputy. This position is responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and general enforcement of laws. Duties include, but are not limited to routine patrol, preliminary and follow‑up criminal investigation, traffic enforcement, performing preventive patrols in assigned areas, making public presentations, conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, suspects, and offenders, collecting physical evidence, gathering and disseminating criminal intelligence, conducting searches, offering courtroom testimony, assisting other public service entities and citizens, and completing various types of reports.
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Physical Fitness
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, measured by a 500‑meter row test, Pass or Fail (1:53 Male / 2:12 Female).
- Applicant will be allowed two attempts but both must be completed during the same row assessment.
- Certification and Qualifications
- Possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
- Hold a current and active Peace Officer license through TCOLE.
- TCOLE training hours must be up to date and in‑compliance.
- Must be currently and successfully qualified with a duty firearm.
- No adverse/disciplinary action review (AAR’s) or sick time abuse within the past six months.
- Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedures, Traffic Code, and Court Procedures.
- Familiarity with policies and procedures of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
- Familiarity with the physical landscape of areas to be patrolled.
- Familiarity with records management systems such as Moblan, OSSI (RMS) and other related systems.
- Communication Skills
- Ability to speak, read, and write the English language in a clear and understandable fashion.
- Ability to write detailed criminal and informative reports.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public.
- On‑Call Readiness
- Must be able to respond promptly when on‑call, including availability via phone and email during non‑traditional hours (nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Adaptability
- Ability to work under adverse conditions and during irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Testing and Review
- Successful completion of a background review and interview board.
- Successful completion of report writing evaluation.
- Successful completion of a physical agility assessment.
- Successfully passed (or pass) the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Field Training Program.
