The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Nursing (SON) Founded in 1890, the School of Nursing was the first nursing program in the Southwest and one of the first schools in the U.S. to be affiliated with a university in 1896. As a component of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), the school of nursing offers academic programs at the baccalaureate (pre-licensure BSN and RN-BSN), Masters (Family, Adult/Geriatric, Acute Care, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Leadership, Nurse Educator) and Doctoral Programs (DNP with BSN entry for Family, Acute Care and Nurse Anesthesia and MSN entry in all NP roles) and PhD (BSN, MSN & DNP entry beginning in the fall of 2026).

The school of nursing is proud of its excellent academic programs, strong clinical environment, modern classrooms, as well as its innovative use of distance education and simulation laboratories. The School of Nursing recently completed successful CCNE and COA accreditation site visits with no compliance concerns. The School of Nursing has a rich history of significant community support.

Associate Dean, Strategic Initiatives & Development - School of Nursing

provides visionary leadership in advancing the school's mission through strategic planning, external partnerships, and innovative program development. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Associate Dean works closely with school leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external stakeholders to strengthen the school's impact, visibility, and long-term sustainability.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of student needs across academic and professional programs.
  • Knowledge of School’s academic disciplines and health system workforce needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to interact with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish goals.
  • Ability to analyze/evaluate data and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to organize and present data in a concise manner.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • A passion for students and commitment to professionalism.
  • Ability to identify and balance a range of needs and priorities.
Educational Requirements & Experience
  • M.D., DNP, Ed.D. or equivalent terminal degree plus five (5) years of experience in undergraduate or graduate student education.
  • Qualify for faculty appointment in the applicable school.
  • Eligible for or hold an unencumbered current license or privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Texas is Preferred but not required.
