Position: Facilities Ops Technician II - BOF - Central Area

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or recognized equivalent and one journeyman level industrial/commercial craft/trade as approved by Property Services Leadership (i.e. Plumbing, Mechanical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms) demonstrated by one of the following:

  • Texas state license or approved equal license with two years of experience at journeymen level.
  • Recognized apprentice program or trade school with two years of experience at journeymen level.
  • Community college certification, or associate degree in a related field with two years of experience at journeymen level.
  • NCCER training program or other UTMB approved certification with two years of experience at journeymen level.

Licensure/certification/degree options listed above can be substituted by 8 years industrial/heavy commercial experience in at least one craft (Job information and references are required to validate 8 years Industrial/Heavy Commercial experience relative to our environment).

Must be capable of demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job in a post‑offer employment test as administered by UTMB Rehab Services.

This job requires the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. floor to knuckle and requires frequent bending, standing and walking.

Job Description

Perform at a journeyman level in at least one distinct industrial/commercial trade craft (Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms) for maintenance and repair of heavy commercial building infrastructure and equipment.

Job Duties
  • Proactively maintain all aspects of assigned area of responsibility.
  • Consult with customers on priority of work and assume full ownership of customer problems and equipment breakdowns. Serve as liaison between customer and Property Services (Physical Plant).
  • Perform detailed inspections of equipment for proper operation. Inform appropriate supervisory or managerial personnel of unusual conditions, problems or deficiencies and take appropriate action.
  • Perform major repairs on complex systems and supporting equipment.
  • Start up, shut down and adjust equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
  • Perform preventive or corrective maintenance tasks as assigned and within timelines.
  • Identify maintenance needs and perform proactive repairs before breakdown occurs.
  • Train and mentor new personnel in area of expertise as required. Teach basic knowledge of codes and proper tool use.
  • Read and interpret and provide “marked up” blueprints/drawings for corrections when needed.
  • Attend and participate in project designs, reviews, shutdowns, project meetings, final inspections and commissioning.
  • Support area shift coverage, on‑call duties, and after hours or extended projects as needed for an institution that operates 24 hours a day seven days a week.
  • Participate in disaster/hurricane preparedness list (e.g. E1A – Ride out team or E1B – Recovery team).
  • Complete all UTMB required compliance training.
  • Attend staff, training and safety meetings.
  • Identify and report safety hazards.
  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Equipment

Use of hand and power tools used in industrial building allied trades. Basic computer skills and ability to use and operate handheld electronic communication devices. Skills associated with diagnostic testing equipment.

Working Environment / Location of Position

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments. May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases and harmful chemicals. Some exposure to weather and physical hazards. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards and may be required to work in high locations or crawlspaces.

  • Exposure to areas under construction.
  • Usual working conditions found in craft shops and mechanical rooms.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions or temperature extremes.
  • Exposure to electrical/mechanical hazards.
  • Proper safety and precaution must be closely observed when operating and repairing specialized equipment and systems.
