A Glimpse of the Job

The Captain
- Inland is responsible for the safe navigation and operation of University vessels in inland waters, serving as vessel master; supervises students and operators and trains them on safe operation practices and safe maneuvering of vessels through various situations.

Essential Duties/Tasks
  • Vessel Master/Second Captain
  • Serves as Vessel Master and navigates vessels safely and skillfully when needed.
  • Serves as back-up Captain for vessel trips as needed.
  • Provides operational leadership onboard the vessel of which they are the master.
  • Maintains a positive working environment and relationships with other colleagues and units on campus.
  • Responsible for the operations in their area of responsibility in accordance with published processes, rules, policies and law.
  • Ensures the overall safety of the vessel and all persons onboard.
  • Ensures operational readiness and maintenance of vessels.
  • Ensures crew is properly trained.
  • Responsible for discipline of direct report personnel.
  • Coordinates logistics with all shore side personnel and port officials.
  • Responds to emergencies as directed.
  • Maintenance and Other Assists staff responsible for vessel maintenance oversight with maintenance requirements to get vessel up to par to operate.
  • Informs staff members of maintenance that needs attention.
What you Need To Know

Salary: $24.00

Part-time Position

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of post-Master’s license relevant industry experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Current and valid Class C vehicle license.
  • Current and valid 100-ton Master’s license—Inland or greater.
  • Current TWIC card.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Supervisory/management skills.
  • Ability to safely navigate vessels in a crowded waterway.
  • Ability to use electronic data methods for scheduling, maintenance records, and business operations.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
