Reporting Relationship: Foreman
Primary Accountability:
The Journeyman is responsible for carrying out technical work in constructing, maintaining and troubleshooting electrical lines, devices and special equipment. This position is also responsible for clearing the right-of-way, restoring power during line interruptions and making all types of poly-phase transformers.
Major Duties:
- Constructs and maintains energized and de-energized electric lines and facilities, devices and special equipment.
- Uses vehicles, special aerial and hydraulic equipment, as well as power tools on a regular basis.
- Maintains efficient distribution during work processes by switching and sectionalizing lines.
- Directs the crew personnel as assigned by the Foreman.
- Frames and installs various pole top assemblies on the ground and in the air.
- Installs, connects, and operates fuse cutouts, arresters, switches, regulators, oil circuit re-closers, transformers and other common line devices.
- Observes and follows all safety rules, practices and standards.
- Installs and maintains large power transformer banks.
- Operates the assigned transportation equipment, tools and machinery in a proper and safe manner.
- Strings, armor-rods, sags, and ties in conductors of all types and sizes on poles and structures.
- Installs pole gins, blocks and other rigging equipment.
- Reads and interprets maps, staking sheets, specifications, blueprints and diagrams.
- Advises the foreman of the maintenance needs on tools, vehicles and other equipment, as well as assists with repairs, as necessary.
- Participates in job training, safety meetings and the annual Cooperative meeting, as required.
- Assists in digging pole holes and anchor holes, installing anchors, as well as setting and aligning poles.
- Makes up and installs guys.
- Loads and unloads poles, transformers and other material, as necessary.
- Works the scheduled standby duty, as required.
- Assists in the installation of metering equipment.
- Completes gas and mileage reports, as needed.
- Installs security lights and related equipment, as needed.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Foreman.
- Fills in as Foreman on as needed basis.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED is required.
- At least four (4) years of experience as a lineman is required.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Class A certified driver's license within thirty (30) days from date of employment.
- Completion of classes from a vocational technical school is preferred.
- Knowledge of the RUS standard construction and maintenance specifications and regulations.
- Knowledge of the Cooperative’s geographical layout of the distribution system.
- Understanding and the ability to utilize business English, spelling and arithmetic.
- Ability to learn all of the personnel policies, in-house policies, and all other policies and procedures required.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and develop reports, sketches and drawings.
- Ability to operate with a thorough knowledge of all safety rules and regulations regarding the electric line equipment, tools and vehicles.
- Ability to operate with a thorough knowledge of all connections, installations and conversions of all of the assemblies of RUS type systems.
- Ability to operate with considerable knowledge of the Cooperative's construction and maintenance needs, interpretation of diagrams, sketches, reports and other engineering plans.
- Ability to operate with knowledge of the Cooperative's policies, rules and regulations, tariffs, rates and right-of-way easements.
- Ability to climb and perform line work on poles.
- Ability to build and maintain positive public relations for the Cooperative.
- Ability to demonstrate a personality which is pleasant, cooperative and mature.
- Ability to work nights and weekends, as required on an intermittent basis.
- Ability to diagnose line faults, sectionalize faults and make repairs needed to restore power.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to walk, climb tall poles and stand to a significant degree.
- Ability to stand, lift, carry, push, pull, balance, twist, bend, stoop, reach, handle, talk, hear, see, grasp, move head and neck and movement across mid-line.
- Ability to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
- Finger dexterity, manual dexterity, alertness, precision, form perception, motor coordination, auditory discrimination and tactile discrimination.
Work Environment:
- Outside/outdoor environment includes extreme hot and cold temperatures, as well as wet and/or humid weather conditions.
- Mechanical or electrical burn and chemical hazards possible with moderate risk of injury.
- Minimal possibility of exposure to toxic wastes.
- Frequently stressful atmosphere with long or irregular hours.
