Position Overview:
This is a responsible, part-time position in the Parks, Recreations, and Communications Department that directly interacts with the public. The Assistant provides customer service at the Radcliff Recreation Center, manages the Information Desk, runs senior, adult, and youth programming, and assists with building and event duties. Work includes welcoming visitors, processing registrations, handling payments, assisting with communications postings, and ensuring that the building is open, safe, and prepared for scheduled activities.
The position also supports the city's communications tools and public service reporting systems.
Role Overview:
The Garden City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking Assistant Tutors and Recreation Activity Leaders to support our after school tutoring program at the Radcliff Community Center. This program operates Monday through Friday between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with three-hour shifts per employee, beginning the week of February 2 and continuing throughout the school year, with an anticipated end in late May.
Assistant Tutors and Recreation Activity Leaders will assist students with homework and school assignments, encourage positive study habits, and help maintain a safe, structured, and welcoming environment for learning. Each program day concludes with a supervised recreational activity that promotes physical activity, teamwork, and fun for all participating students.
Additional work opportunities may be available for candidates interested in Building Assistant shifts at the Radcliff Center or Summer Camp Counselor positions for the City's half-day summer camp program.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with youth, value education and recreation, and are interested in making a positive impact in the Garden City community.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as front desk greeter, welcoming visitors, providing information, and assisting with program or event registrations
- Operate the Information Desk, including managing communications and service request through municipal systems such as See Click Fix , the GC Fix It portal, website, and the Code Red alert system.
- Provide directions, answer general inquiries, and ensure service requests are documented, forwarded, and completed appropriately.
- Assist with program enrollment, membership tracking, and payments, ensuring records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Provide building and event support, including room scheduling, set-up, and ensuring meeting spaces are prepared.
- Perform routine building monitoring, including walk-throughs, restroom checks, furniture straightening, and reporting maintenance needs.
- Support communications functions, including updated bulletin boards, signage, and distributing program flyers or announcements.
- Assist students with homework, school assignments, and basic academic support
- Encourage positive study habits, focus, and respectful behavior
- Provide a safe, structured, and welcoming environment for all participants
- Supervise students during tutoring and recreational portions of the program
- Help plan, set up, and lead age-appropriate recreational activities
- Promote teamwork, physical activity, and positive social interaction
- Monitor attendance and ensure program rules and expectations are followed
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, parents, and guardians as needed
- Report student behavior, safety concerns, or incidents to supervisory staff
- Assist with room setup, cleanup, and general program organization
- Follow all Parks and Recreation policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including Building Assistant or Summer Camp support when scheduled
- High school diploma or equivalent (current high school or college students encouraged to apply)
- Interest in working with children and supporting youth in an educational and recreational setting
- Previous experience in childcare, tutoring, education, recreation programs, camps, or youth activities preferred
- Ability to provide a safe, positive, and supportive environment for students
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to follow directions, policies, and safety procedures
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work scheduled shifts consistently
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Willingness to learn and participate in program training
- Ability to pass required background checks and pre-employment screenings as required by the City
