Job SummaryThe Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long‑term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. The LPN demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles for the resident in the relevant clinical setting, practices within the full scope of nursing expertise, and utilizes appropriate age and population‑specific standards related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the resident as per the care plan.
Responsibilities include performing testing to evaluate resident status and providing the necessary care, recognizing problems and recommending solutions, responding effectively to emergent situations, ensuring the health, comfort and safety of residents, contributing to resident assessment, administering medications or treatments as ordered, providing technical support to healthcare professionals, documenting resident interactions and outcomes, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with residents, health‑care providers, and the public, and communicating clearly while maintaining confidentiality.
The LPN also counsels residents, family members and/or resident advocates under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider or physician on prevention and treatment plans, and applies resident education principles to develop self‑care programs.
- Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse. An associate degree in practical nursing is preferred.
- If the position requires IV therapy/management skills, graduation from a board‑approved AASPN program where IV therapy is part of the curriculum or completion of an approved IV Therapy course is required (North Dakota).
- Have attended a pre‑licensure nursing program that included supervised clinical experience across the lifespan as part of the curriculum or have a minimum of 400 hours of experience as an LPN at another facility.
- Currently hold an unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with the state nursing board and/or possess multi‑state licensure privileges.
- Obtain and subsequently maintain required department‑specific competencies and certifications.
- Complete required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training requirements of the department and facility.
