Overview
Under general direction, performs homemaking duties for senior citizens enrolled in the City’s senior services programs including light housework, shopping for personal and household items, escorting clients to medical appointments; provides hands on assistance to clients with physical needs to include stand‑by assistance, supervision, or cues for clients, as with toileting, transferring in or out of chair, eating, and walking.
Representative DutiesPerforms light housekeeping and laundry duties in client homes; assists with organizing and maintaining a clean, safe living environment for clients; transports and escorts clients to essential appointments and shopping; provides assistance with mobility, transfers, and ambulation; assists clients with toileting as needed; assists with senior programming and activities; observes and monitors clients for changes in physical or mental condition and promptly reports concerns to supervisors;
documents information related to tasks performed; communicates effectively with clients, staff, supervisors, and client family members and support team. Participates in ongoing training, in‑services, and skill development related to elder care and safety. Performs other duties as assigned in support of programs and activities within the Recreation and Human Services Department.
A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Experience working with the elderly population is desired.
Knowledge and AbilitiesAbility to communicate effectively, listening and speaking and empathize with the elderly; personal qualities of sensitivity, patience, and the willingness to work with the elderly required. Bilingual ability, highly desirable.
Physical Demands and Working ConditionsWork is performed in indoor and outdoor environments and may have exposure to household pets; incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions; work and/or walk on various surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces. Duties require the ability to speak, hear, touch, see, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull. Must be able to lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
Finger dexterity is needed to complete handwritten forms, access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator; requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi‑skilled repetitive movements, such as typing on a keyboard, filing, data entry, and/or use of a personal computer or other office equipment and supplies; may involve sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time; must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel to different sites and locations.
Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment, an appropriate, valid CPR and basic First Aid Certificate. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License – minimum “Class C” – to be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
