Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
POSITION SUMMARY
With direct supervision from a Lead Technician, Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager, a Maintenance Technician performs repair and maintenance work on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks including chassis components, refuse bodies (control, hydraulic, electrical systems), air brake systems, general engine work, HVAC components, and suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems. The role supports drivers in running routes and servicing technically advanced vehicles on a single fleet.
Responsibilities include maintaining and repairing intricate machinery, receiving training on new technologies, working a regular shift in a stable industry, and being recognized for exceptional performance.
Maintains advanced knowledge of vehicle components and systems to perform complex repair and maintenance functions on site and on the road.
Key responsibilities include:
- Chassis component repair and maintenance
- Refuse body systems: control, hydraulic, electrical
- Air and hydraulic braking systems
- Engine repair and diagnostics with diesel fuel system knowledge
- Suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems
- Heating, air conditioning, and aftertreatment system diagnostics and repair
- Electrical diagnostics using scan tools
- Line maintenance, welding, and fabrication
- Identify malfunctions using electronic tools
- Complete applicable company training programs
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned
Ability to diagnose multi‑system issues and consistently demonstrate technical expertise.
5–7 years of experience as a technician working on heavy‑duty trucks.
Ability to perform inspections and repairs without supervision in some systems, including:
- Suspensions & Steering
- General Engine
- Transmissions
- Brakes
- Electrical
- Hydraulics
- Drive Train
- Diesel Emissions
ASE Heavy Truck Certifications (T1–T8) are a plus but not required.
LNG and/or CNG experience is a plus but not required.
Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License is a plus but not required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSValid Driver’s License.
