Job Summary

The Central Sterile Manager must be able to perform all the duties of a CST II and meet or exceed Heywood Healthcare /Perioperative Services and industry standards as set forth by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM). The manager serves as the leader and primary clinical resource for all of Central Sterile Processing Department’s services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ensuring complete and accurate coordination of case cart assembly for all Operating Room cases, assuring uninterrupted daily supply of complete case carts, assuring adequate necessary supplies and order as needed, providing education to staff in accurate assembly of necessary instruments, assuring that central sterile quality practices are maintained as set forth by the professional and accrediting organizations.

The Central Sterile Manager is responsible for establishing, maintaining and overseeing adherence to the quality standards, policies and procedures based on the recommendations of professional and accrediting organizations. Additionally, Central Sterile Manager is responsible for making schedule and ensuring adequate staffing of the department. This position is a working manager and will require on call as needed.

Responsibilities Essential Functions
  • Maintains certification within professional organization; educates, leads and motivates others to pursue and maintain professional certification.
  • Supervises the operation of decontamination (washer and sterilizer) prep and packaging to include instruments, t rays, sterilization and proper storage in sterile stores area.
  • Maintains a continuous education program within the area for self and staff, to include methods and work performance standards.
  • Maintains accurate records and checklists of all staff competencies.
  • Demonstrates and insures proper procedures are followed related to the use of sterilized equipment, setting up of treatment and instrument trays, maintenance of equipment as required, within the department.
  • Insures sterilization quality assurance and bacteriological sampling of materials.
  • Insures control of sensitive items.
  • Insures the storage of materials conforms to all applicable le health regulations.
  • Reviews literature, trade magazines, management, and other publications to keep abreast of new techniques, methodology and new equipment to be used in Central Sterile in addition to improving performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintains current (and oversees adherence to) policies, based on the recommendations by the relevant professional organizations.
  • Monitors the autoclaves, sterilizers, washers and other equipment through approved methods.
  • Supervises and conducts inventories as required.
  • Advises Environmental Services to insure that all areas are cleaned as required.
  • Maintains statistics and prepares reports as required.
  • Orients new employees to the department.
  • Conducts performance evaluations of personnel when required and counsels individuals as to their performance.
  • Participates as a member of the Product Evaluation and Infection Control Committee and other committees as deemed necessary.
