Emergency Room Nurse

Assessses and reassesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions, plans of care, and patient goals. Provides patient care based on standards of care, practices, protocols, and established policies and procedures. Respects each patient as an individual and provides care that fosters a sense of dignity and positive self-regard. Provides patient and family teaching based on identified learning needs, readiness to learn, and barriers to learning.

Collaboratively plans and prepares patients and families for discharge, incorporating support systems and resources as necessary. Appropriately delegates and supervises nursing interventions performed by others. Prioritizes patient care, seeking assistance as needed and recognizing the need for emergency intervention. Documents all pertinent data, therapeutic interventions, and patient responses according to established standards in a thorough, timely, and accurate manner. Provides timely and thorough reports on assigned patients to other healthcare team members to ensure integration of services and continuity of patient care.

Promotes learning for colleagues and self by functioning as a preceptor, instructor, or trainer and attending professional development programs. Proactively identifies risks to patient safety and opportunities to reduce medical or healthcare errors, reporting incidents as appropriate. Identifies ethical issues in care and develops plans to address them. Safely administers medications and intravenous therapy in accordance with physician's orders, protocols, policies, and procedures.

Assesses patient pain levels upon admission and as necessary and reassesses the effectiveness of pain control. Performs and documents initial assessments upon patients' arrival and implements triage protocols as needed. Identifies patients at risk for potential or alleged abuse and initiates safety plans as necessary. Completes required mandated reporting in a timely manner and documents forensic evidence per policy. Maintains knowledge of disaster policies and procedures and identifies patients at risk for violent behavior.

Demonstrates knowledge of indications for restraint use and monitors patients accordingly. Recognizes normal and abnormal laboratory and diagnostic results, notifying the physician of changes in a timely manner. Safely administers vasoactive medications while understanding dosages, actions, uses, side effects, and titration parameters. Performs accurate and timely identification of cardiac arrhythmias. Institutes, monitors, and documents thrombolytic and anticoagulation therapy standards and protocols.

Demonstrates skills associated with the initiation and maintenance of the intubated patient including suctioning and troubleshooting. Accurately interprets arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, and clinical features of impaired gas exchange or airway clearance. Responsible for obtaining supporting information and completing required documentation related to medication reconciliation. Responsible for implementing components of the VAP bundle consistently. Alerts the Nurse Manager or Director if there is any deviation from the VAP bundle for case review and follow-up.
