Job Description Overview
This role is responsible for supervising day-to-day data center operations, maintenance, and improvements to the physical infrastructure, and for providing training and guidance to Data Center Technicians and Facilities Technicians. Regular, predictable attendance is essential.
Responsibilities- Supervise the Data Center Technicians and the Facilities Technicians.
- Operate and maintain the data center to assure optimal uptime for facilities services (electrical, cooling, etc.) as measured by Five 9’s.
- Task the CFOps team in compliance with all local, state, and federal requirements for fire, health, and life safety.
- Provide tasking for daily operations and maintenance scheduling of non-critical and critical maintenance.
- Ensure the CFOps team works effectively to achieve CFOps goals, reviewing budget, staff planning, NPS, efficiency, etc.
- Analyze data center equipment to obtain maximum effectiveness and efficiency; consider safety, cost, longevity, and reliability.
- Conduct in-depth training with Data Center Technicians on equipment, PMs, QA, and CFOps procedures/processes.
- Manage and maintain all training documentation; provide documentation to HR.
- Ensure data center operates at maximum efficiency, including analyzing operating conditions, recommending new technologies, maintaining customer SLA requirements, and improving efficiency within budget.
- Collaborate with customers to provide successful installs that exceed expectations.
- Supervise the safety and well-being of all CFOps team members.
- Responsible for shift assignments, timekeeping review and approval, and PTO approval for all assigned technicians.
- Write and review non-critical and critical MOPs, SOPs, SMPs and provide input.
- Supervise the execution of MOPs and ensure thorough completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Strong background in electrical and mechanical systems design review, layout, installation, commissioning and operations.
- Expert knowledge of low voltage systems, including fire, security and PLCs.
- Expert knowledge of NFPA Electrical, Fire and Life Safety and building codes.
- Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and compliance issues.
- Expert knowledge in industrial safety best practices (lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
- Experience with data trending/tracking and analysis and ability to rapidly learn and use PC-based, integrated critical monitoring systems.
- Strong supervisory skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Hands-on experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial mechanical and electrical systems including: 12kV switch gear, 480/277 and 208/120 V distribution, diesel generators up to 2MW, static UPS, battery and monitoring systems, PLC and relay logic controls, power monitoring systems, data center power distribution and management, VFD drives, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water treatment, HVAC equipment, CRAC units, Kyoto cooling units (where applicable), Building Management and PLC control systems, emergency standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, NFPA 25 sprinkler/dry standpipe systems, backflow prevention, and related systems.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
- Ability to train electrical and mechanical teams on systems and procedures.
- Ability to conduct power and fire system capacity, safety and code compliance assessments.
- Ability to operate in a process-driven, team environment and to logically analyze and solve problems.
- Ability to multi-task multiple projects and maintain attention to detail.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent with ~5-6 years related experience.
- Minimum 5+ years in a mechanical/electrical role within critical facilities (data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant experience preferred).
- Minimum 2+ years as foreman, lead or senior technician in a critical facility.
- Certified Electrician preferred for the assigned state.
- CPR/First Aid and NFPA
70E Certification during employment. - Forklift certification.
- Primarily walking, standing, and bending with some sitting.
- Effective verbal, visual, and listening communication.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Close visual work on a computer terminal; dexterity for equipment operation and computer use.
- Ability to climb ladders and work on raised platforms.
- Typical data center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises.
- Extensive daily computer use.
- On-site work; no telecommuting.
- Comfort working in a highly critical, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Ability to respond to data center emergencies.
- Willingness to participate in after-hours notification and escalation protocol.
- Must carry a cell phone for shift and emergency availability.
- Willingness to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays.
