SMT Operator
The SMT Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and performing basic maintenance on Surface Mount Technology (SMT) equipment in a PCB assembly manufacturing environment. This role ensures accurate placement of electronic components, conducts detailed inspections, and maintains production efficiency while adhering to IPC-A-610, AS9100D, and other regulated quality standards. The SMT Operator supports consistent product quality by following documented procedures, resolving routine equipment issues, and maintaining accurate production and quality records.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate SMT production line equipment for PCB assembly according to work instructions and production schedules.
- Load, verify, and replenish components in feeders and trays, ensuring correct part numbers, orientations, and quantities.
- Perform basic maintenance and preventive maintenance (PMs) on SMT equipment to support reliable and efficient operation.
- Monitor the SMT line during production to maintain throughput, identify issues, and minimize downtime.
- Identify and resolve common SMT line issues such as feeder jams, alignment problems, and machine faults, escalating complex issues when needed.
- Perform first article inspection (FAI) and visual inspections of assemblies to verify component placement, polarity, and solder quality.
- Conduct microscope inspections to ensure product meets IPC-A-610 and other applicable quality standards.
- Verify bills of materials (BOMs) against loaded components to ensure accuracy before and during production runs.
- Support component kitting and loading activities to prepare SMT lines for upcoming jobs.
- Document production data, inspection results, and quality findings using computer-based systems and forms.
- Follow established procedures and quality requirements in regulated environments such as aerospace and medical device manufacturing.
- Collaborate with production, quality, and engineering teams to address defects, improve processes, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and ESD-safe work area in alignment with 5S principles.
- Handle small and delicate electronic components with care to prevent damage and ensure product reliability.
- Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors regarding line status, issues, and improvement opportunities.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of experience in SMT or electronics manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience setting up and operating SMT production line equipment.
- Knowledge of IPC-A-610 standards and ability to apply them to ensure product acceptability.
- Experience performing first article inspection (FAI) and visual inspections for component placement and solder quality.
- Ability to identify and resolve common SMT line issues, including feeder jams, alignment issues, and machine faults.
- Ability to identify electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits (ICs) and understand polarity.
- Basic computer skills for machine operation, data entry, and documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and precision when working with small components and fine-pitch assemblies.
- Good verbal and written communication skills for interacting with cross-functional teams and documenting work.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining quality and accuracy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in regulated manufacturing environments such as aerospace and medical device production.
- Familiarity with AS9100D and other regulated quality system requirements.
- Experience with microscope inspection for detailed evaluation of solder joints and component placement.
- Exposure to continuous improvement practices within manufacturing operations.
- Experience with BOM verification and component kitting/loading processes.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance (PMs) on SMT equipment.
- Comfort working closely with production, quality, and engineering teams in a collaborative setting.
