Position: 5203 - Data Center Technician L2

Your role at a glance

The Data Center Technician provides a working level of data center knowledge and is responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. The Technician maintains processes that maximize customer uptime cost‑effectively, identifies and repairs problems quickly, coordinates contractors, and meets internal customer demands.

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Develop creative approaches to keep operational costs minimal, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.
  • Mechanical responsibilities: chilled water systems, HVAC (roof‑top units, CRAC/CRAH, humidification).
  • Electrical responsibilities: critical power distribution from utility/generator main switch gear through UPS to customer load.
  • Fire life safety responsibilities: wet and pre‑action sprinklers and associated detection devices.
  • Test electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and technical orders to determine methods and sequences.
  • Inspect parts for defects and install electrical or electronic components in housings or assemblies using hand or power tools.
  • Align, fit, or assemble component parts; operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facility systems.
  • Areas include mechanical, electrical, fire life safety, and building monitoring and control.
  • Analyze systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers.
  • Provide feedback to relevant teams on effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Work with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance program.
  • Ensure data centre operates at maximum efficiency and manage maintenance requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • In‑depth understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems in data centres (e.g., electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, SSTs, ATTs, PDUs, chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinklers).
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building codes related to fire life safety.
  • Industrial safety best practices: lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA and state regulations.
  • Data trending, tracking, and analysis with PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems.
  • Manual handling of hand- and machine‑tools and operation of forklift.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Strong communication skills, written and oral.
  • Team orientation, ability to coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors.
  • Rapid learning and problem‑solving; multi‑tasking across projects.
  • Comfortable working under high stress, fast‑paced environments requiring nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Critical thinking and complex problem‑solving skills.
Academic Qualifications and Certifications
  • Relevant high‑school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Relevant advanced qualification or equivalent work‑related experience (required).
  • Certifications:

    CPR/First Aid, NFPA 70E (can be gained during employment); OSHA approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire.
Required Experience
  • Solid, demonstrated experience in a similar data centre facilities role.
  • Experience in mechanical/electrical positions within critical facilities (data centre, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant).
  • Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial/industrial systems, including: chilled water systems, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment, VFDs and pumps, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, water heaters, water/air filters, BMS and PLC controls, emergency standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, 480/277 and 208/120 electrical generation and distribution, static UPS systems, double interlock pre‑action systems.
  • Experience leading a critical facilities maintenance team (preferred).
