Summary
The Staff Anesthesiologist within the Anesthesiology Service is located at the Garner VA clinic in Garner – North Carolina and will deliver care in the operating room, perioperative evaluation clinics, critical care units, and pain clinic. The Garner VA Clinic offers multi‑specialty services – including Primary Care, Mental Health, and Urgent Care – to around 25,000 Veterans across Wake County and neighboring counties in Eastern North Carolina.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable). Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
BasicRequirements
- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Accepted residencies include ACGME‑approved programs, AOA‑approved programs, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. - Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Additional Requirement:
The physician must be board certified in anesthesiology or have comparable training and experience as judged by the Chief – Anesthesiology Service - For service in critical care medicine or pain management, additional subspecialty board certification or equivalent is expected.
- Physician must have demonstrated academic accomplishments, including but not limited to authorship of papers in peer‑reviewed journals, chapters in major textbooks, and lectures delivered at local, regional, national, or international professional meetings.
- Physician must have demonstrated or be working toward national recognition in academic medicine through appointment or election to national anesthesiology and related medical societies.
- For physicians whose staff appointment includes research productivity expectations, the physician must secure external research funding—including competitive grant applications—for basic, clinical, or translational research in fields pertinent to the veteran patient (e.g., traumatic injury and pain).
- Physician must be board certified/eligible and eligible for an unrestricted North Carolina license.
- Physician must be eligible for an appointment as Duke University faculty.
- Physical Requirements:
This position requires lifting 15–44 pounds; pushing (~2 hours); reaching above shoulder; using fingers and both hands; walking and standing 3–5 hours; kneeling; rapid mental and muscular coordination; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; hearing aid use is permitted.
