Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Perform complex repairs, troubleshooting and planned maintenance on the mechanical and electrical aspects of electrical power generation systems. Be able to respond to customers internally and externally with the utmost professionalism to meet our Gregory Poole core values of CITES (Commitment, Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence and Safety).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Be able to logically evaluate the job given to them in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Use mathematical formulas as part of troubleshooting.
  • Maintain a consistent 85% productivity rate.
  • Write daily service reports and record time entry.
  • Monitor systems – Modbus, Ethernet, CAN bus; upload/download files and parameters; possess above-average computer skills.
  • Be available for emergency calls during normal rotation at least 7 days at a time; accessible by cell phone except during scheduled vacation or personal time off.
  • Be competent in understanding Caterpillar UPS systems and receive necessary product training.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external personnel and customers in written and verbal formats; train end users on equipment operation.
  • Interpret and modify as-built condition schematics on job sites and in manuals; interpret manuals for assigned jobs.
  • Be aware of all safety factors surrounding high-power circuits; adhere to all company safety policies (e.g. EPG safety work policy). Failure to comply can affect employment status.
  • Act as a role model and safety ambassador for all corporate safety policies and protocols, including timely safety training completion, PTSC requirements, PPE requirements, etc.
  • Identify components in the system, including modular system, processors, power supplies, I/O modules, and communications modules.
  • Modify or fabricate products to meet job-specific requirements.
  • Attend training courses related to the position; communicate training needs with supervisor.

Additional Prerequisite for Position:

Be well versed in the electrical and mechanical aspects of electrical power generation and familiar with diesel, gasoline, and LP gas engines.

Advanced understanding and troubleshooting skills in the following systems:

  • Lubrication, cooling, fuel systems (mechanical and electronic)
  • Generators operations and applications (permanent magnet and self-excited)
  • LP gas
  • Generator Instrumentation
  • Engine Instrumentation
  • Load Banks
  • Electrical actuators
  • Industrial Communications Protocols
  • Governors (mechanical and electronic)
  • Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS)
  • Battery charging systems
  • Voltage regulation and power conditioning
  • Surge suppression and other associated electrical devices
  • Electrical Safety and PPE, Lockout‑Tagout
  • KVAR and power factor controls
  • Caterpillar (and other OEMs) engine controls

Candidate must have had exposure or work-related experience with the following areas of the Electrical Power Generation Industry.

  • Control panel upgrades and modifications (Cat EMCP, Easy Gen, Deep Sea, etc.)
  • Various automatic transfer switches and switch gear manufacturers.
  • Rotary and battery UPS systems.
  • UPS battery testing and reporting software.
  • IFR thermography and reporting software.
  • Load bank testing.
  • Updating and creating system drawings and schematics using various software platforms.
  • NFPA and NETA standards.
  • Various monitoring devices and systems (Cat Connectivity products, Omnimetrix, etc.)

Individuals should be well versed in the electrical aspect of power generation regardless of the type of gear being worked on. Must comprehend basic Automatic Transfer Switches, PLC-based industrial controls, electronic engine governors, remote monitoring systems, stored energy systems (UPS), and electrical power surge suppression equipment.

Proficiency with electronic test equipment: digital voltage meters, phasing indication meters, insulation testing equipment, harmonic distortion meters, IFR cameras and associated software, battery testing meters, load banks and Caterpillar test equipment. Demonstrate above-average comprehension of electronic diagrams and flow charts.
